Espresso. Mac web development, now more productive than caffeine.

Espresso: now in Public Beta

As you may know, we planned to have Espresso ready in November. Unfortunately our schedule slipped and while we have an active private beta program, everybody else was getting a little antsy. With this in mind, we have decided to open up the Espresso Beta to everyone until we reach the final. Espresso is already a great editor — and we love using it ourselves — but we want to make more changes before slapping the official "version 1" seal on. This Public Beta allows us to do that without being an annoying tease.

State of the Sugar

Extensibility is in Espresso's DNA, but we have chosen not to distribute any third-party Sugars with this first public beta. If you'd like to check out what sugars are in the works, browse the Espresso Forums or have a look at Coffee House (thanks to Alex Gordon!).

Roadmaps, or the lack thereof

We won't publicize additional features that will be added in and after v1.0 — which will at least contain the features described on this site — to avoid tears and heart-ache. There will be new beta builds and/or the final 1.0 as we go. Espresso has a built-in software updater, so updating is quick and easy. If you decide to pre-order Espresso, please do so on the merits of the current features and not pure speculation about new additions.

What about CSSEdit?

One thing that deserves clarification: Espresso will not replace or kill CSSEdit. After version 1.0 we do plan to build some parts of CSSEdit into Espresso, but CSSEdit will continue to be developed as a great standalone style sheet editor too.

Info

Espresso requires Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or higher. Public Beta is time-limited and needs to be updated regularly.

There Will Be Bugs

If you're afraid of some wonkiness, please walk away now. While Espresso is not going to devour your canary, it is still in beta. If something weird happens, we'd love to have your feedback!
